Enhanced Water

Beverage companies are tapping into the newest niche product: enhanced waters that tout health benefits beyond mere hydration. Some identify themselves by flavor or ingredients (Pear Cucumber, B-Power), others by perceived benefit (Focus), and still others by target audience (Women's Health). A few things to know: While these waters contribute to your daily fluid needs, they are not intended to replace meals or serve as your primary source of water. And along with vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, herbs and other additives, many contain sweeteners, which means more calories. You also have to be careful about how much you may be getting of certain ingredients, such as the stimulant guarana.

The latest development in the category of bottled water is the “enhanced waters” or “premium waters” genre. “This genre is characterized by the addition of a strategic ingredient or nutraceutical. These additives are unique in that each “flavor” has a different component to it for a specific health benefit. It may be an energy booster, a calming ingredient, a hydration element or a multi-vitamin additive. Enhanced waters are lighter alternatives to the “energy,” “sports” and “alternative” beverage categories, although they do contain sweeteners and a small caloric content.”
